Guest Room Essentials

Guest Room Essentials

How many stars would you give your guest room?  Does your guest room have to do double duty?  Is your guest room currently your child's room?

Every home is different and it definitely goes though phases as our family grows.

I recently realized that I haven't updated my guest room since my daughter went off to college.  It somehow became the shrine to her belongings and I just worked around it.

It has a twin bed and pays homage to HER hobbies and tastes.  Time for an update!!!

Clean & Comfortable

Fresh sheets are a must. Dust-free tabletops and give the floor a once-over with the vac.

Sheets & Pillows

Stain and rip-free. I like solid sheets with a decent thread count. Have a variety of pillow densities available so your guest can choose their favorite.

Blankets

I usually put one-two blankets on the bed, depending on the time of year, and have a couple more in the closet for easy access.  A throw blanket at the foot of the bed is a nice touch. Especially in the morning when your guest might like to wrap up before grabbing their cup of coffee.

A place for luggage

Provide a surface, luggage rack, or floor space for baggage.

Full-Length Mirror

This is at the request of my sister, Arlean,  and best friend, Amy. Apparently, they need to see their FULL outfit before leaving the house. lol A light mirror that hangs on the back of the door is ideal for small spaces.

Trash Can

This can be small but necessary. Everyone has trash, airport tags, etc that need to be disposed of.

Night Stand Necessities

Tissue, outlet or phone charger, and a water bottle are nice touches.

A Bit of Closet Space

It's nice to prove a couple of hangers and some space in the closet if your guest has clothing that requires hanging.

Lighting, Lamps, and Air Flow

Nightstand reading lights are great. A ceiling fan is perfect for summer nights or to provide white noise in busy neighborhoods. **If your room's primary light switch controls an outlet versus a ceiling light, make sure that outlet has a lamp plugged into it.

A Place to Hang Your Bath Towel

I prefer this to be in the guest bathroom, but if space is an issue, have a hook or coat rack for bath towels to dry.

Vanity Mirror

If space allows, it's nice to provide a place for applying make-up and doing hair.  If your guest bathroom is shared by many guests, this is important. A surface to put cosmetics is nice too.

Hair Appliances

A blow drier, curling, and flat iron take up a lot of luggage space.  Providing these for your guest is a big luxury.  Purchase a good quality appliance appreciated. I have very thick hair and drying it with a poof of wind from a cheap blow dryer makes for a frustrating morning.

WiFi Password

I like to display our WiFi password in a cute frame but here are some other fun ideas for your guestroom.

Things to Avoid

Too many throw pillows that your guest will just have to stash in order to find the bed.

If your room's primary light switch controls an outlet versus a ceiling light, make sure that outlet has a lamp plugged into it.

Plug-in air fresheners, or other heavy scents.

Avoid placing the bed side against a wall.
